This renovation project represents a unique fusion of rural and coastal architectural styles, combining elements of beach and country for a unique aesthetic. The redesign focuses on creating a cohesive living space that maximises the use of sustainable materials while prioritising energy efficiency and low maintenance requirements.
A key feature of the renovation is the extensive use of Lawson cypress (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana), a durable and aromatic timber species. This material serves as both exterior cladding and interior finishing, creating a seamless transition between outdoor and indoor spaces. The integration of Lawson cypress is further exemplified in the custom-designed balustrade, which combines steel components with this signature timber, showcasing innovative material pairing. In the main living areas, encompassing the lounge, kitchen, and dining spaces, exposed Lawson cypress rafters serve both structural and aesthetic purposes, contributing to the overall architectural language of the house.
The renovation emphasises timber craftsmanship, evident in the meticulous detailing throughout the structure. This focus on wood not only imparts an earthy, natural feel to the living spaces but also aligns with the project’s commitment to sustainable building practices. The careful selection of materials and construction techniques results in a dwelling that balances energy efficiency with low maintenance requirements, offering a practical yet aesthetically pleasing living environment that harmonises with its surroundings.
